TEDxSOMA

I talked about interactivity and data at TEDxSOMA about a month ago. TEDx is a local version of TED and there are TEDx events being organized all over the world. Great work by the team at Parisoma putting this one together. Sadly, like nearly every restaurant in the world, they misspelled my name on this video.

I was Robert Scoble’s last interview of 2009

I went down to Half Moon Bay between just before the end of the year and talked with Robert Scoble about what we’re working on at Justin.tv. I wore my I <3 Cheese shirt to mark the occasion.

2010 goals

I’ve never been into new year resolutions. They always seemed too concocted to be interesting. For reasons that aren’t entirely clear to me, I’ve decided to make a couple this year. I think these are things I’ve been wanting to do anyway, so perhaps they’re only resolutions due to coincidental timing. Regardless, on with it!

Cook more

I really enjoy cooking but have barely done any of it since starting at Justin.tv in May. It doesn’t help my cause that they feed me 9 meals/week. I want to cook more though, so I just bought a bunch of new stuff (knives, pans, etc) and I’m hoping to cook one interesting thing per week in 2010. I’ll leave “interesting” to my own subjective judgment, but suffice to say that boiling a hot dog won’t qualify.

Exercise more

Pretty straightforward. I bought a bike earlier this year (and promptly injured myself falling off). If I had any idea what was reasonable, I would set some kind of goal for miles ridden, but I don’t. I do have a cool iPhone app that will track my rides via GPS though, so hopefully it will come out to a big number. Goal here is to feel more energetic and active…mostly I want to look better naked.

Organize more

My apartment is perpetually a mess. Same goes for my desk, my desktop (the only on my computer) and various other things that waste time and annoy me. My goal here is to never feel like I need to spend time cleaning up–I’m told that being organized on an ongoing basis can do this! Step 1 here is to hire a house cleaner.

Sleep more

I am too often inclined to sacrifice sleep for short term gain, which just results in long term loss. It’s probably not reasonable to avoid sleep deprivation all together, but I’m going to try hard to raise my threshold for what justifies it.

I’m keeping the goals pretty personal and intentionally excluding things that I want pretty much every year, like to do the best work of my life and play better golf.

Lunchtime science + candy

Yesterday, on the way to dinner, I was introduced to Cranberry Raisinets. Ignoring the poor naming scheme for a moment, I conducted a double blind (aka not blind at all) scientific experiment at lunch today.

My first observation, corroborated by the photo below, was that the cranberry variety suffered from a significant size disadvantage.

I was able to obtain statistical confirmation that the Cranberry Raisinets are, in fact, nearly 50% smaller.

All problems weren’t with the cranberries though. You’ll see that the normal Raisinets suffered from poorly aligned opening instructions, with the “Tear Here” prompt nowhere near the actual pre-torn location.

Onto the science, I developed a fool-proof system for conducting a fair and unbiased test.

I did two rounds of testing, but first a palette cleanser.

Verdict? While the Cranberry Raisinets offer a sweet, more acidic experience, the traditional Raisinets really knock it out of the park with a creamy chocolate goodness. In the end, both are delicious–since they are priced equally, I’m forced to conclude that traditional Raisinets, at twice the size, offer significantly more value, while the new (I think?) Cranberry Raisinets are benefiting for a demand bubble and limited supply due to back ordered cranberry packing machines (completely made this up). Regardless, they are both tasty.

Justin.tv Pay Per View

I did an interview with Andy Plesser at Beet.tv last week and talked about some new products we’re launching. Mashable and NewTeeVee thought it was interesting, I suppose, and posted the news with my video interview embedded. Quite the surprise this morning!

BBC Interview

I did an interview with the BBC to talk about Justin.tv’s place in the world of media, how we deal with piracy and what’s next for us. They did some creative editing to cut off and combine some of my answers, but nothing too bad. It was pretty fun, although I hate hearing my voice. It ran on a BBC radio show called Live 5 (I think). You can play the audio below.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Messing around with some design

I took this
barackswatch original

…and made it into this
barackswatch

Lazy items aside (order button, ugh), I had fun with it. I wanted to make it simple and emphasize what you’re actually supposed to do–buy Barack’s watch.

Exciting week of my face on blogs

I was on Mashable, TechCrunch and CrunchBase (not a blog, but the most surprising of the bunch).

I also presented on stage at TechCrunch’s real time stream event.

Dataporn overload, loving it

I got access to all of our internal analytics at jtv today and I am in data-driven heaven. There is so much to be tweaked and optimized, I could keep myself busy just on that for the foreseeable future–I won’t but I could.

Going from looking at my personal site, which I think did 10 views yesterday, to looking at Justin.tv, which has done more pageviews in the time I’ve been writing this blog post than all websites I’ve ever owned combined, is surreal. The guys over there have done a great job growing the company over the last couple years and I am PUMPED to continue (and hopefully improve) that.

I am overflowing with ideas right now. Need to focus on getting those organized and prioritized this weekend.

I’ve been acquired, quiet period over

The recent lack of blog posting is pretty lame, so I’m devoted to going on a writing streak over the next few weeks. This will be easier because I’ve got some really cool stuff to write about. Starting on Monday I will be the VP Marketing at Justin.tv.

It’s an outrageously cool opportunity with a great company full of great people. I’ll be responsible for everything from PR to customer acquisition and everything in between. When I asked about what they were looking for in my interview the answer pretty much came down to, “We want to find the person who will tell us that!” Hmm, okay I’m in.

So far I have been almost completely unable to sleep. I’m waking up at 4am flooded with ideas for things I want to test out, data I want to gather and content I want to develop. There is so much to do and it’s hard to pick what to do first. Thankfully I have a few more days to straighten my head out and go into JTV with a lot of control over what I’ll be doing. It’s exciting, scary and above all amazing. I can’t thank Justin and Michael enough for the effort they put in to answer questions and fast track the whole process.

I’m going to try to write as much as possible along the way about what I’m up to. Here’s to a hectic next few months (years?)!
