Lazy items aside (order button, ugh), I had fun with it. I wanted to make it simple and emphasize what you’re actually supposed to do–buy Barack’s watch.

Definitely an improvement (aside from the stretched out button). Having Obama's face there is key.
This reminds me of a case study of the conversion techniques used on the Skype site. If you're a returning user, or arrived via certain search terms, you see a homepage with more explanatory text, like the first version. If you arrive directly, you're shown a more focused site with a clear call to action, much like your new version.
